There are two trim levels for the 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen, and they are called the S and the SE. There is also a third option, which is to get the S trim level with 4MOTION ®. 4MOTION ® is the name of the Volkswagen brand’s four-wheel drive system, which sends power to all four wheels to improve handling and traction.

There are other differences between the Golf SportWagen S and the S with 4MOTION ® as well including their pricing, fuel economy, and design, which means that they are about as similar as separate trim levels. As you can see in the chat below, the S with 4MOTION is as different from the S as the SE is from the S. Thus, we are comparing all three of them. Keep reading to learn more about each trim level with our 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen trim level comparison.

Both the 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen S and SE have a 1.4 L Turbo engine, while the S with 4MOTION ® has a 1.8 L Turbo engine. The S and SE have the same performance specifications including fuel economy and a 147-horsepower power rating. The S with 4MOTION ® has a larger and more powerful engine that is rated at 168 horsepower. The more powerful engine is crucial for delivering power between all four wheels instead of just two.

There are differences in their design as well. The 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen S has cloth seating surfaces and 6-way partial power-adjustable front seats. The S with 4MOTION ® has the same but has the additional benefit of heated front seats. The SE trim level has V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces instead of cloth seating surfaces, but otherwise includes everything that the S with 4MOTION ® does in its seating plus a 115V power outlet.
